On the War Path

In the dark, trapped in morning traffic, I spied something unusual. A tall man in a light shirt was bent forward and walking fast in the opposite direction. I realized with surprise that he was wearing a headband with feathers and... war paint.

I turned my car around as quickly as I could. I had to take a picture!

When asked about the occasion/motivation for his dramatic appearance, the man replied, "It's a long way from Tennessee!"

Indeed!

Dress Like a Cow

Friday the 13th was "Dress Like a Cow" Day at our local Chick-Fil-A fast food restaurant.  Our neighbors, young and old(er) had a lot of fun making their costumes and admiring each other's creativity.

Favorite 4th of July Float

The 4th of July parade in Marietta was good fun. The community turned out to see their neighbors, cheer for the beauty queens and politicians, wave flags and eat.

Here are some pictures of my favorite float - the one designed by kids.

Cherokee St, Marietta Square

I like this float because it has everything a float needs: Kids, a flag, bubbles, and a monster. But mostly I like it because it is creative and fun.

Oh, yeah... it has a tank, too!

Sawnee

Statue honoring Sawnee, local leader in the Hickory Log District of the Cherokee Nation. This sculpture is located in front of the visitor center and trail entrance at Sawnee Mountain Preserve.

Many thanks to Sandy for helping me find this wonderful surprise by the side of the road!

Down by the Stream

Next door to the deer family, the homeowner has created a bucolic still life.  He has dammed a small stream that flows through his property, planted flowers, and installed a bench and a statue.

Closer view of statue

The statue is a seated boy who is presumably fishing.  He is carefully painted with black skin, pink lips, white eyes and a red-and-white outfit... a perfect caricature loaded with meaning from a time long past.  There is no fishing pole.

I assume that the homeowner enjoys looking out over his property, including the still life gracing his front yard.  I imagine that he may occasionally come down from his house to sit on the bench and ponder the natural beauty around him, sharing a pleasant hour with his sculpture.

Or... perhaps not. Perhaps this display is meant to impart a different message, something for those passing by to understand... that not everyone is welcome.

Made from Junk - Mailboxes

I had a wonderful sculpture teacher at the University of Virginia, Michael Christopherson.

Mike was from Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He mentioned that there were a lot of mailboxes made from discarded tools in the South.  Fortunately, some of these improvised mailboxes are still standing.
